What he understood - the real point of the joke - was that every writer is a regionalist, that literature has no center except for the human heart. In a number of his books, most famously the 1966 novel “ The Last Picture Show,” he recast Archer City as Thalia, a community caught between the present and the past. McMurtry, after all, was nothing if not a regionalist he lived for much of his life in Archer City, the small north Texas town where he was born. On the other, it is a provocation, a challenge to the literary status quo. On the one hand, it reads like a joke he’s playing on himself. In it, he plays with a cat while wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the slogan “Minor Regional Novelist.” Such an image almost perfectly reflects what made McMurtry such a feisty talent, self-deprecating and pointed by turns. When I think of Larry McMurtry - who died on Thursday at 84 - I recall a photograph taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s: a portrait of the artist as a young man.

Back to when the great men of Shange’s childhood weren’t mere remembrances, but were living, breathing, creating, pioneering people. (By the way, did you guys know Kadir Nelson created Michael Jackson’s posthumously released album cover?) The way she is an observer as well as a part of something bigger. No matter what’s pictured, it’s the little girl in the blue dress we look for. The art in this book is by Kadir Nelson, who is a painter’s painter, a master of beautiful realism that draws you in. And Duke Ellington was one of the many influential men who gathered at Shange’s house when she was a child. Which leads us to its title: Ellington Was Not a Street. In the same way, this picture book circles back to the past and brings it forward again. The words of this book are taken from Ntozake Shange‘s 1983 poem, “ Mood Indigo.” And that title is taken from Duke Ellington’s famous song. Ellington Was Not a Street by Ntozake Shange, illustrated by Kadir Nelson (2004). They make photography sometimes too easy. Saul Leiter: I like using digital cameras. I’m not sure what he meant but I like the sound of it.ĭG: Your ‘early color’ is very distinctive in look – it is ‘old color’ like the work of Helen Levitt yet you seem very comfortable using digital cameras which normally have a different ‘now look.’ Are you ever concerned about the way color has changed? He once said that I’m not really a photographer I just use photography for my own purpose. He’s much better at understanding and describing what I do. I’d much rather have Max Kozloff do that. Saul Leiter: I don’t apply labels to my photographs. Do you think this particular word is more appropriate than say just street photographer? What label if any would you apply to your photography? DG: The Art Historian, Max Kozloff describes your work as ‘more soulful than many’ other photographers. His home offers little respite from his rage and misery. The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World The whole scene was repeated every night for as long as the tulips were in bloom, for as long as Sultan Ahmed managed to cling to his throne.” At the appointed moment a cannon sounded, the doors to the harem were flung open, and the sultan's mistresses stepped into the garden led by eunuchs bearing torches. All the guests were required to dress in colors that flattered those of the tulips. Songbirds in gilded cages supplied the music, and hundreds of giant tortoises carrying candles on their backs lumbered through the gardens, further illuminating the display. In place of every fourth flower a candle, its wick trimmed to tulip height, was set into the ground. Each variety was marked with a label made from silver filigree. Most of the bulbs had been grown in place, but these were supplemented by thousands of cut stems held in glass bottles the scale of the display was further compounded by mirrors placed strategically around the garden. Tulips whose petals had flexed wide were held shut with fine threads hand-tied. “Each spring for a period of weeks the imperial gardens were filled with prize tulips (Turkish, Dutch, Iranian), all of them shown to their best advantage. Margolis said that Monroe's death will be argued even over 100 years after the incidence but the reality is that the case is closed and many people refuse to believe that it was murder or suicide but consider it as an accidental overdose. However, Monroe was also suffering through depression as she struggled with the failure of three marriages, and she also feared being typecast as a 'sex kitten' in Hollywood. The book also asserts that the 'Some Like It Hot' star had been having a secret affair with JFK, and then his brother Bobby, while also bedding Dr Greenson, and had threatened to expose them.
